Submit to Appalachia@250: Dreams of a Shared Future

100 Days in Appalachia, in partnership with the Rural Digital Resilience Project, is documenting Appalachians’ reflections on America’s past, present and future as part of the national US@250 initiative.

Appalachia@250 is co-created alongside YOU – people living in Appalachia today. We want this project to capture how you are thinking about America’s promises and failures, your own communities, and what you envision for the future of Appalachia and the country at large. This project should embolden you to tell your own stories in your own voice.

Over the next few months we will periodically be posting new prompts to this page to get your gears turning about Appalachia’s past and future. You can respond to these prompts in whatever way most speaks to you - videos, photography, voice recordings, essays, poetry - anything that captures your narrative in your voice.* You can send us your original responses using the dropbox links below:

*Please include a written explanation alongside your submission answering the following questions (can be doc, pdf, screenshot of a text, etc – whatever is easiest so we have context about your submission!): What have you submitted? And why is it important to you or your community?

What is the oldest thing in your community?

What is the newest thing in your community?

in your life, what do you feel in control of?

what do you feel is out of your control?

what would you like future generations to know about your life right now?

what do you think or hope the future looks like?

FAQs

How will my submissions be used?

  • Your submissions may be used in a variety of ways, including a direct post to the @100DaysinAppalachia Instagram page, use in future documentary projects, inclusion in future web content, and more. Though any use of the submission which would identify you specifically will only occur after a follow up from the 100 Days team explaining how we would like to present your submission.
  • Please reach out to [email protected] with any questions.

What must my submission look like?

  • Your submission can look like just about anything! We are accepting video and audio submissions, photography, essays, artwork, poetry, and more - anything that captures your unique experience in your own voice.
  • Alongside your submission, please also include a short written excerpt (can be via document, pdf, screenshot of a note, etc) providing context about what you’ve submitted, answering the following questions: What have you submitted? And why is it important to you or your community?

Are there rules to what can be submitted?

  • We are only accepting submissions of original work – that means you have created and are the owner of the work you’re submitting. However, you can reference or reflect on others’ work in your submission (for example, if you write an essay about a piece of art you experienced).
  • We also will not accept submissions of any content that depicts abuse, pornography or other obscene or harmful material. We are real people viewing these submissions; please be kind.
  • If you have any questions about whether something can or cannot be submitted, please reach out to [email protected].

If there is work that you have not created but want to share with us, please reach out [email protected] or @100daysinappalachia on Instagram. We love to see cool stuff!

What if I miss a deadline?

  • That's okay! We are rolling out different questions every few weeks, so if you need more time to reflect or miss the submission timeline for a certain prompt, you can still submit your response to any of the prompts we've published at the above link.

Can anyone submit?

  • Yes! The Appalachia@250 project is targeted to Appalachians 18-25 to reflect on this moment in time and design an ideal future, however, anyone living within or connected to the Appalachian region can submit to these prompts and may be featured in the project. We want to hear from anyone and everyone!

What if I don’t know the specific answer to a prompt?

  • That’s okay! While we encourage you to use this project as an excuse to engage with and learn more about your community, we are looking for responses that capture YOUR lived experience. How would you answer this question knowing only what you already know?

Can I use AI to create my submission?

  • No! We want to hear directly from YOU in YOUR own words. Please do not use generative AI for your submission.

Will I be contacted about my submission?

  • Yes! You should receive an immediate response upon submission from Dropbox confirming that your submission has been sent. You may receive additional contact from the 100 Days team if we want to present your submission publicly on our social media channels or otherwise. If you do not receive any response please email [email protected] for assistance.

If you have any other questions about the project or opportunities to engage, please reach out to [email protected].
