Now Hiring: Part-time Newsletter Writer

100 Days in Appalachia is seeking a knowledgeable, creative and motivated part-time writer to help shape the editorial voice and strategy for our newsletter products.

The ideal candidate has a proven talent for writing with experience in copy editing and social media strategy for digital media, and can work collaboratively with our team of editors, writers and reporters, as well as other project partners, to create a fresh, consistent voice across our digital newsletter content. They will be responsible for the creation, design and curation of our weekly newsletter – assisting with selecting/editing visual elements for news and social media products that effectively support the voice of the publication – recruiting and managing Appalachians who may have less experience in writing for our Appalachia Creators and Innovators newsletter series, and contribute to other community engagement and fundraising projects on email platforms as necessary.

The part-time newsletter writer will have a passion for supporting storytelling that digs into the complex sources of and state of the divides within Appalachia but also cultivating difference-bridging storytelling and community-building among diverse audiences. The ideal candidate is an Appalachian native who lives in the region, but we will consider applicants who have chosen Appalachia as their home. We anticipate a commitment of 25-35 hours of work per month with an hourly rate of $25-35, based on experience.

100 Days in Appalachia is a digital news publication that serves both national and international audiences seeking new insights and rural context for the political fractures that resonate across many American communities. Our mission is to push back against the national narrative of the region that has reduced it to a handful of narrow stories and amplify the missing voices and unique perspectives of Appalachia.

To apply, send a resume, cover letter and writing samples to the executive editor at [email protected]. Please use the subject line “Newsletter Writer Application.” Applications will be accepted until position is filled.

Pay increases associated with additional responsibilities are available for those who have additional experience in fundraising. If interested in additional duties, please detail any previous fundraising and/or grant writing experience in your cover letter.
