100 Days in Appalachia and West Virginia University’s Reed College of Media seek a full-time Visiting Practitioner-in-residence for a position beginning in January 2020.

100 Days in Appalachia and West Virginia University’s Reed College of Media are seeking a unique candidate with an enthusiasm for exploring the journalistic and scholarly worlds of Appalachian culture and identity and a passion for sharing new media and documentary storytelling techniques with professional and future journalists, artists, writers and storytellers.

This high-profile position will be a two-year, full-time appointment, responsible for the development and integration of 100 Days in Appalachia’s skills and perspectives into University classrooms, from journalism to the humanities to the arts. The practitioner-in-residence will build on existing cross disciplinary partnerships and recruit additional faculty participants from selected humanities departments to participate in developing the new social documentary/film curriculum, with an emphasis on teaching visual storytelling and innovative documentary styles.

The practitioner-in-residence will also serve as a member of the editorial team of 100 Days, working closely with publication managers, editors, reporters and editorial partners to create and curate documentary and multimedia content.

This part editorial, part faculty position will aid in designing, promoting and producing development and training workshops in new social documentary storytelling techniques and technologies for University faculty, students, community members, publication partners, and working professionals in collaboration with the College of Media faculty and a digital humanities advisory group that will also include community advisors from the region. Over the two-year period, he, she or they will also convene with faculty to engage in multi-platform storytelling and production to share ideas for teaching these skills and techniques in their courses and support curriculum development for a proposed new interdisciplinary major.

We are seeking diverse candidates with relevant professional and/or academic experience who excels in one or all of the following areas:

  • Visual storytelling, producing, editing, documentary/multimedia content
  • Communicating innovative new humanistic social documentary practices
  • Incorporating methodologies and approaches from the humanities to deepen and narrate complex stories

Qualifications:

This position requires a master’s degree in Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, or a related relevant field, and significant industry experience in one or more of the areas listed above. Collegiate level teaching and experience in curriculum development and management are strongly preferred.
