As Republicans in Congress push to help President Trump make good on a campaign promise to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, people in Appalachian states prepare for some potential changes to their health care coverage and — consequently — their personal finances. With states like West Virginia and Kentucky benefitting from Medicaid expansion, a drop in uninsured rates and a growing need for addiction treatment programs, many in the region are expressing concerns how a repeal and / or replacement of the ACA might affect them. Others in the region say premiums remain unaffordable and hope to see certain provisions of the ACA — such as the individual mandate penalty — eliminated.
